NEWTS TBR | Why do I do this to myself?

If you’ve seen my last post then you’ll know that I just got back from traveling around Asia for a month and a half. It was amazing BUT while I was out exploring the world I left myself out of the book-o-sphere loop and I had absolutely no idea that the NEWTS readathon, created by G over at Book Roast on YouTube, was happening this month!

For some reason I like to torture myself so I decided that, despite getting back exactly a week ago (I’m still recovering), I was going to try to participate in the NEWTS readathon. I think the key word in this is try. I’m certainly going to do my best, but I think what I’ve learned about myself this past year is that I am so bad at sticking to set TBRs it’s not even funny. And yet here I am. Participating in something that pretty much requires a set TBR unless you have a bunch of books at the ready, which I don’t because everything I own is in storage right now.

Now, I participated in the OWLs readathon this past April. It was a big fat fail. I was trying to get all the OWLs for the Curse Breaker career, and I ended up getting OWLs for Herbologist and Magizoologist. Since I’m definitely a rule follower, I’m going to choose to follow the Herbologist career for the NEWTS.

On top of participating in the NEWTS readathon/reading challenge, I also need to read some ARCs that I got on Netgalley! That fact that I received any ARCs completely blows my mind! But I don’t have one but FIVE ARCs that need to be read and reviewed. Actually. I already read one of the ARCs, The Immortal City by Amy Kuivalainen – it was great, while I was traveling. Unfortunately, that means that I was a bit distracted and didn’t annotate anything, so I have no notes to write a review for it, so I need to go back through it and write up my thoughts so I can actually write a good review for it. Anyway, I needed to figure out a way to fit my ARCs into the NEWT prompts, though some of them don’t fit… I need to read it anyway though. Update: I made them all fit! Ohohohohohoho.

So, clearly I have a lot on my plate this month. That’s not even considering working and looking for/applying to jobs down in LA. Hoo boi.

Enough of that though. Here are the books and the prompts that I will be following!

Care of Magical Creatures (A) – Title that starts with “A”

Also Known As – Robin Benway

Herbology (A) – audiobook (bonus: it also has a green cover lol)

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl – Jesse Andrews

Herbology (E) – b/t 350-390 pages

The Memory Thief – Lauren Mansy (ARC)

Minor Prophets – Jimmy Cajoleas (ARC)

Herbology (O) – flower on the cover

Dear Haiti, Love Alaine – Maika Moulite & Maritza Moulite (ARC)

Potions (A) – read a friend’s favorite book (or mom’s I guess)

The Eyre Affair – Jasper Fforde

Potions (E) – cover is Hogwarts house color

Steel Crow Saga – Paul Krueger (ARC)

Ok yas, got all the ARCs to fit! I’d call that a pretty good success. Now we just have to wait and see if this readathon/challenge will be a success as well. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I’ll probably need it.

Are you participating in the NEWTS magical readathon?
